The line stretched into the parking lot — really into the next parking lot for the opening of the new ALDI grocery store in Pflugerville. “We are German-based but we’re independently managed and operated here in the U.S. We’ve had our stores in the U.S. since 1976,” said Matthew Lundborg, Director of Store Operations for the area.
For those unfamiliar with ALDI, Lundborg explains how it’s just a little different.
“Our products are under their own exclusive label and what that means is we partner with the top national suppliers to produce products for us but they don’t put their names on it. And that helps us keep our prices low but maintain the highest quality of our products,” Lundborg said.
So there’s the crash course for the uninitiated, Cindy Crouch is not one of those people.
She’s done her research. “I even subscribed almost 6 months earlier to see what the sales were…I am so excited about this store,” Crouch said.
She says she’ll save quite a bit on her grocery bill every month coming here.
“Canned goods are 39 cents, you know that’s really…88 cents for a loaf of bread,” Crouch said.
“Well I grew up in Pflugerville so from a population of 272 when I could read the population sign to now over 70,000 we have really…we’re bursting at the seams, we’re growing every day,” said Pflugerville Mayor Victor Gonzales.
The Mayor says his hometown has come a long way from the small dry-goods mercantile store the town had when he was a kid. “As a matter of fact we have become a regional community so we have people shopping from all over fromRound Rock, Leander, Hutto, Cedar Park, they come because of the tollway it just makes it that much more convenient,” Gonzales said.
According to Amy Madison, Executive Director of the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation, in just one year the city has welcomed 7 new projects that have absorbed 1.2 million square feet, 157 acres and they’re expected to bring 830 new jobs.
One of them is the new Baylor Scott & White — the Mayor says it’s Pflugerville’s first hospital.
The 97,000 square foot medical center is set to open in 2018.
